SIIA Brown Bag Lunch: Why Twitter Matters
Twitter today has more than 6 million registered users and the Twitter site received 55 million unique visits during the month of January. To-date more than 1 billion “tweets” have crossed the Twitter platform. Much has been made of the use of Twitter by celebrities from Barack Obama to Shaquille O’Neal, but is Twitter a serious platform for publishers to monitor? The reality is that Twitter is already starting to have a business impact. Dell sold more than $1 million in products via Twitter, while companies from Comcast to Zappos have found Twitter a compelling way to provide customer support and improve their corporate reputations. News aggregator Newstex has found customer interest in aggregating and organizing tweets. With its rapid growth, an ecosystem is starting to spring up around Twitter in a similar, albeit smaller, way to that of Google. Meanwhile, Pistachio Consulting’s Laura Fitton notes that “Information and ideas do not spread on Facebook the way they do on Twitter”.
